Climbing the stairs from the basement to the main floor in our home was a challenge for me 22 years ago. When I reached the top step, I would find myself out of breath and my legs aching. At that time I was 40 yrs. old, weighed 207lbs. and was very out of shape. One day after climbing those stairs, I made a decision to make some changes in my life. I started exercising and improving my food choices.
Nine months later I had lost over 50lbs. and felt great. During the following two years, I was certified as a Personal Trainer and I started my business Body Design. This year, I’m celebrating 20 years in business. I’m very proud and gratified to know that our services have helped thousands of individuals improve their health and achieve their wellness goals. The Body Design slogan is as relevant now as it was when I started in May of 2002 – Be Fit, Eat Well and Live Life!
Today the stairs from the basement to the main floor of my home represents a new focus for me. Now my goal is to just get up those stairs because one day I know I will not be able to.
I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease 5 years ago, although I have had Parkinson’s symptoms for at least 7 years. Parkinson’s Disease is a chronic, progressive neurological disease with no specific cause and no cure. Right now, it affects the left side of my body but it will eventually move into my right side too. I currently take 6 pills a day to manage my symptoms.
I recently saw my neurologist. She told me that I was doing really well for having had the disease for 7 years and that my symptoms were not progressing as quickly as she sees in most of her patients. Why? Because I exercise on a regular basis. Exercise has been proven to slow down the progression of Parkinson’s disease.
I know if I don’t keep moving, my Parkinson’s will take over my body. I cannot take my health for granted and what I do today will directly impact my quality of life now and as I age.
I’m hoping my story will motivate you, inspire you and encourage you to practice a healthy lifestyle and perhaps look at the stairs in your own home a little bit differently.
Yours in health!
Kim
